Koloradska jelka je večje, hitrorastoče drevo, ki dobro prenaša sušo in onesnažen zrak. V višino doseže 12 do 15 m. Iglice so daljše, modro-srebrno zelene in prijetnega vonja. Krona drevesa je široko stožčasta, obraščena od tal. Storži so sprva rumeno zeleni, v zrelosti rjavo vijolični, ter sedeči na vejah obrnjeni navzgor. Najboljše uspeva v humoznih, rahlo kislih tleh, ki morajo biti dobro propustna in na sončnih legah.
